i don’t think i’ve ever experienced hunger.

Singapore is so full of abundance. food, water, money – what is there we lack? we have one of the world’s most effective education systems, a higher GDP per capita than most first world countries, our own proprietary water filtration technology; we are rich beyond comprehension, given our geographical and physical circumstances.

yet we are so poor.

we are so easily satisfied with food, water, good music, romance, knowledge, that we have forgotten what we really need. it is not a desire for pleasure that destroys us, but desires for pleasures so weak, so far off from what brings true pleasure that truly wreck us.

fasting reminds us of that.

our physical hunger reminds us of our even greater spiritual hunger. it reminds us that this is not the world we were made for. God is not preparing us for this world. yes, we are groomed for our ministry on earth. yes, we get hungry. yes, we get thirsty. yes, we get tired. but the ultimate goal for His children is not physical fullness, neither is it hydration, nor is it sleep. the chief aim and plan God us for all Christians is eternal life and intimacy with God. (Revelations 21:3-4)

And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.”

Matthew 9:15

The bridegroom is no longer here. And so we fast, knowing that one day we will be with Him eternally Рfood and water are secondary concerns to the eternal fate of our souls.
