monopoly millionaire

pearls to pigs
and we scrambled,
gambled
raise or fold,
who knows
when none of us dare to show.

pearls to pigs
and we look down,
thinking they shine brighter.
so we keep our heads low,
don’t show, don’t fold –
don’t let the river flow.

pearls to people,
matter most –
why bother trying harder;
our hands are set in stone,
though our hearts are harder still

our hands,
they turn to tend our broken mill.
