the struggle of staying

stay my hand,
that i may not pierce myself,
or plague my body with feverish desire,
or loathsome longing
for things not mine –
they never should be.

what i already have,
what is it i cannot see?

stay my hand,
stay my heart,
my flesh is calling out to me.
but You whisper through my veins,
i know You see me.

stay my hand,
let it reach for You instead!

stay my hand,
that the rest of my body may follow suit,
and in Your shadows
rest again.
