promises don’t stem from trust. they stem from doubt. that a man’s word isn’t enough. that there is innate power in a pinky, an oath, a promise. when we begin to doubt the finality and integrity of our partner’s words, that’s when we make promises.

‘no babe, i love you. i promise.’

‘im sorry i won’t hurt you again. i promise.’

‘please don’t leave me. i promise to be a better man.’

isn’t sad that we have to invent words to replace ‘yes’ and ‘no’, just so we can trust people? there’s no more power in statements and declarations, if it doesn’t come along with a promise.

and we wonder why promises are so easily broken.
