trenches

pick up your spade
two thumbs on the prowl
pinky on support
plunge through the black and white
digging into the red
unseen.
plough through the night
daylight brings no mercy
when the red flows all the more closer.

don’t let the metal fade
where iron runs softer covered in blood.
dig, but not too deep.
a hole too deep, leaves others to enter.
dig a trench,
but never for yourself.
cause the second rat always gets the cheese.

so dig, ever wary
of shells and gunpowder,
that might fill the hole you dug.
